Stainless Steel Vacuum Centering Rings with FKM O-Rings are critical sealing components designed for high-vacuum and ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) applications. The centering ring consists of a precisely machined stainless steel body (SS304 or SS316L) with an integrated elastomer O-ring groove. Installation & Maintenance Guidelines
Proper Installation Procedure:
- Surface Cleaning: Ensure flange surfaces are thoroughly cleaned and free from particles, oils, fingerprints, or contaminants. Use isopropanol or acetone with lint-free wipes.
- O-Ring Inspection: Check the O-ring for any damage, cracks, deformation, or contamination. Replace immediately if any defects are found.
- Lubrication (Optional): Apply a thin layer of vacuum-compatible grease (e.g., Apiezon L or Krytox) to the O-ring for improved sealing and extended service life.
- Ring Positioning: Center the ring precisely between the flanges, ensuring the O-ring sits properly in the groove without twisting or pinching.
- Clamping: Tighten clamps or bolts evenly in a cross-pattern to the specified torque (typically 6-10 Nm for KF flanges, consult manufacturer specifications).
- Leak Testing: Perform helium leak testing to verify seal integrity achieves required vacuum level before system operation.
Maintenance & O-Ring Replacement:
The stainless steel centering ring body requires minimal maintenance and can be reused indefinitely with proper care. Clean with solvents and inspect for scratches or deformation before each use.
The FKM O-ring should be inspected regularly and replaced when:
- Visible compression set exceeds 20% (permanent deformation)
- Surface cracks, tears, or cuts are observed
- Hardness increase is detected (becoming brittle or stiff)
- Leak rates exceed acceptable limits during routine testing
- After 50-100 thermal cycles (depending on temperature and conditions)
- After exposure to incompatible chemicals or extreme temperatures
Storage Recommendations: Store replacement O-rings in a cool (below 25°C), dark, dry environment away from direct sunlight, ozone sources, electrical equipment, and incompatible chemicals. Keep in sealed bags with desiccant.
